Seema Sathyu

OVERVIEW
Seema Sathyu is a visual artist who has painted for over 25 years and exhibited work in India and abroad. Also worked in theatre and film and has developed a style in the art of quilt making.
Experimented with painting in various mediums on canvas, paper, glass, chairs and boxes.
Early works were figurative with theatrical representation of emotion combined with a cinematic sense of space. Later works are abstract and reflect symbolism through very bold use of colour, inspired by Sufi poetry.
In her paintings she has used nature as an idiom to delve into the vast world within herself and find connections between poetry, music, even architecture, body and soul and the physical world.
She has conducted art workshops for children.
Worked as part time art teacher at Schools in Bangalore.
She has occasionally been a visiting faculty at Srishti since 1998 and is currently working as full time faculty at Srishti since 2019.
She studied BFA (Painting) from Baroda and MFA(Painting) from New Delhi. She has attended Theatre workshops by alumni of NSD and done the Film appreciation course at FTII, Pune.

CURRENT PRACTICE AT SRISHTI
Teaches contemporary art practice studios to under-grad and post-grad students. This includes drawing and mark making; painting, paper collage, composition; form making in paper casting and papier mache’; soft sculpture in fabric; patchwork and applique tapestry; upcycling and making with found material
