Course Overview
The Creative Manufacturing Program aims to train young professionals to work with the traditional crafts, manufacturing, and textile industries to transform them into successful business enterprises. The program teaches a comprehensive method that combines design, business acumen and an understanding of the market to improve the design & production of creative goods.
The core content of the course focuses on:
- The ability to design to fulfil customer aspirations and industry needs & create sustainable profitability.
- A keen hands-on understanding of the material, manufacturing process and business

Vision
With over $500 billion in annual revenue today, the creative manufacturing and handmade (CMH) sector is projected to grow by 20% annually, reaching $1 trillion by 2024, creating a huge opportunity. India’s creative manufacturing industry has a 5000-year artisanal legacy and about 60 million workers. This growing industry needs designers who can marry business, productivity, technology, and design to create products for contemporary needs.
This program aims to train practitioners who can design for Indian and international markets for craft-based creative goods. You will learn to work hands-on in design, use of materials, production practices, business and entrepreneurship to become work-ready design practitioners. You learn to employ state-of-the-art processes, including using digital technology to impact millions of Indians and effectively transform India’s global market share in creative manufacturing.

Pathway 1: Products and Furniture Design
The Product and Furniture Design pathway offers a comprehensive look at the creation of everyday items, focusing on form, function, and sustainability. You will learn to merge aesthetics with practicality, using design principles and ergonomic research to create items that enhance living and working spaces. The coursework covers materials and production methods, preparing you for real-world manufacturing constraints and innovations. Collaborative projects and critiques are key components, fostering a dynamic learning environment where you will refine their design sensibilities.
The program guides you to think as a designer and business owner, understanding traditional crafts, efficient design, and how to make things. You will learn to design products and systems, how to make them, and how to manage the production process in small or medium businesses. Graduates of the course will have the skills to craft thoughtful, innovative designs for a range of products and furniture, ready to enter the professional design field.
What you will learn
Year-1 (NSQF Level 4 & 5)
- Training to use hand tools and power tools following all safety protocols
- Learn various forms of drawing, including product & furniture sketching, orthographic, and technical drawing.
- Ability to choose appropriate material for a project and able to use various hand and power tools to shape it into a product & furniture
- Use 2D and 3D software to create visualisations and technical drawings
- Gain experience in designing simple products & furniture, their detailing, ergonomics, production processes and methods
- Ability to organize production flow in a micro or small enterprise.
- To interact with customers and understand the market needs to create products accordingly & to communicate with small-scale industries to produce the design created.
Year-2 (NSQF Level-6)
- Break down a product’s production processes into component elements for line production.
- Be able to create products & accessories which would complement the production process, logistics, storage and ease of assembly & use by the end user.
- Be able to ideate and visualize, design a value proposition, work with multiple materials and processes to add value, and design product ranges in addition to single products.
Year-3 (NSQF Level-7)
- Ability to break a task down, understand and balance a production cell or line, and plan and design production facilities.
- Ability to adopt technology appropriately, implement measurement and evaluation systems and understand complex value chains.
- Ability to start their enterprise or work in a small or medium scale manufacturing enterprise as a designer, production co-ordinator or merchandiser.
Pathway 2: Textiles and Apparel Design
This Textile & Apparel Design Pathway focuses on the value of handmade and handcrafted Apparel. The course builds an understanding of the process and technique of designing apparel and garments. The program hones the production knowledge and business skills needed in the textile industry.
Knowledge and understanding of fibres, fabrics and quality control, surface embellishment techniques, principles of apparel manufacturing and measurement systems and introduction to traditional Indian textile techniques and handloom weaving will be part of the journey.
The course also sensitizes students to design fashion trends sustainably. The sheer variety and craftsmanship extant in Indian textile traditions are unique worldwide. Customers today need contemporary expressions of traditional textiles and high-quality editions of traditional wear and home textiles.
What you will learn
Year-1 (NSQF Level 4 & 5)
Gain experience in surface embellishment, print and embroidery, screen printing, basics of weaving, basic garment construction and pattern drafting and home linen accessories.
Be able to create simple textile surface designs and weaves.
Gain basic knowledge about the production process and business skills.
Year-2 (NSQF Level-6)
Draw & interpret the technical drawing of apparel for the various allied industries. Acquire the skill to visualise apparel using Adobe© Illustrator application.
Ability to apply learned skills in Advanced pattern drafting and Garment construction in future projects.
Understand entrepreneur design thinking process to realise one’s potential in business skills.
Compile all acquired skills while working in an apprenticeship/internship with industry partners/designers/mentors to create both experimental and commercial creative products.
Gain short term industry experience before final year through various exposure programmes.
Year-3 (NSQF Level-7)
Be able to design apparel and textiles with an understanding of end customer needs, market analysis and aspirations and the ability to understand and work in a value chain of production.
The students will build the professional, communication and business skills they will need for successful employment, starting up their enterprise or medium-scale manufacturing enterprise as a designer, production co-ordinator, or merchandiser in today’s global fashion industry.

The three years of this course align with levels 4, 5, 6, and 7 of the NSQF guidelines and create skilled practitioners for the above sectors.
