The Writing Centre at SMI aims to develop the writing skills of the Srishti Manipal community. Writing is universally regarded as a key element in communication. Through the act of writing, the Centre looks to foster and promote critical engagement with the relationship between art and design thinking, communication, and documentation. It emphasises writing as a key skill in the practice of Art and Design – one that can interact with and enhance other modes of expression.
Faculty associated with the writing centre consider writing as a preferred mode of communication and expression. By offering courses focused on clear and expressive writing, they hope to cultivate discernment, critical thinking and compelling writing skills among the students and faculty of the institute. They explore with students the role that writing plays in shaping creative practices and collaborate with other faculty and students in bringing out creative and discursive output that reflects individual and collective practice within the Srishti community.
The Writing Centre also aims to create a repository of self-learning materials that any member of the Srishti community can access to hone their writing skills. In addition, the Centre collaborates with experts in journalism, academic writing, and storytelling to offer workshops and masterclasses on writing styles and approaches to writing.
