1-YEAR PG Diploma Program

Awards Offered: PG Diploma

Program Overview

The Post Graduate Diploma Program (PGDP), taught over two semesters, is crafted for individuals joining Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design & Technology, with an undergraduate degree, sensing a need to develop their art and design practice or enter the world of myriad emergent creative professional opportunities. It is a unique opportunity offered to undergraduate students of any discipline: a year to find the time and space to engage with ideas and explore the possibilities of a more enriched career and profession in the creative and cultural industries, while finding their passion. The PGDP allows an individual to choose between two pathways, each of which has been designed to align with different levels of learning.

The foundational and preparatory Bridge pathway makes it possible for a student to enter the world of art and design, with three years of undergraduate education even from a totally unrelated discipline. The program engenders the essential thinking and making skills needed to join the various Postgraduate Professional courses offered at a Masters level. Currently Bridge is offered for IADP and IAIDP.

The Finish pathway provides an opportunity to learn and advance one’s practice in a chosen field being a space to refine one’s knowledge and position, after an undergraduate program or a period of work experience in creative fields. This program helps to build on previously acquired skills with strategic pedagogic support and inputs in art, design and research processes. Currently, some one exiting the MA program in its first year is considered to be a PGDP Finish. Hence with an aspiration of acquiring a PGDP Finish one needs to enrol for an MA Program, where at the end of the first year one has the choice to either exit with a PGDP Finish or continue into the second year of MA.

Here is a website to check the work of 2023-24 entire batch of PGDP through the lens of their collective portfolio co-designed at the end of the academic year.

This program makes it possible for a student to enter the Professional Post Graduate Program at Srishti Manipal with three years of undergraduate education from a totally unrelated discipline. The program is preparatory and foundational and will engender the essential thinking and making skills needed to join the various Postgraduate Professional courses offered at the Masters level.

After successful completion of the Bridge, students will get automatic entry into the Masters’ program at Srishti Manipal in the area of specialisation that they had chosen in the PGDP year:

Program 2: Finish

The purpose of the Finish program is to provide an opportunity to learn and advance one’s practice in a chosen field. It is a space to refine knowledge after an undergraduate program or a period of work experience in fields such as Animation, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Textile Design, etc. This program helps to build on previously acquired skills with strategic pedagogic support and inputs in art, design and research processes.

Note: Applicants should apply to the MA courses if they intend to take up PGDP Finish. There is no separate application form for PGDP Finish; one can exit at the end of year 1 of MA with an award of a PG Diploma upon successful completion of the graduation requirements.

Many new careers have emerged today which value design thinking and creative and artistic expression. Students who choose to do this program will find themselves transformed. After their time at Srishti Manipal, they will be able to consider newer spaces and opportunities within their chosen fields.

This Program is based on the notion of work-based learning, which has been defined as

“Work-based learning (WBL) is an educational strategy that provides students with real-life work experiences where they can apply academic and technical skills and develop their employability.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work-based_learning).

The program goes beyond treating technical education as a lower classification in the hierarchy of higher educational opportunities and while it fulfills the mandate of the National Skills Qualification Framework –NSQF – it works at the higher level of skills and competences needed for the creative industries, which is the fastest growing sector of the Indian economy. The 3 year Undergraduate Program has certain clear characteristics. They are:

  1. Duration of a minimum of 3 years to earn a university degree – Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.) in an area of specialization
  2. Has multiple points of entry and exit with certification as per the published norms
  3. Sequenced guidance and learning in work related tasks (defined as core competences and skills)
  4. Clear line of sight to work or employment in the relevant sector.
  5. Work experience based learning (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work-based_learning) through a clear and well articulated linkages program.
  6. Access to and evaluation by industry led standards
  7. Opportunities to become a specialist in a niche area of the industry
