The provocation at the heart of it: urban theory, even when it turns to the Global South, stays anchored to the metropolis. But the statistical majority of South Asia’s urban population lives in census towns, hill cities, and tier-2/tier-3 towns — places with their own governance logics, economies, and socio-spatial trajectories, not smaller versions of Delhi or Mumbai. What urban theory emerges if we start there, instead of treating them as footnotes?

Early-career and established scholars working on South Asia’s small cities and towns are invited to a two-day workshop featuring paper development, methodological exchange, and structured writing support — building toward a lasting collaborative network.
