It involves designing systems, services, spaces, and products to facilitate meaningful interactions and experiences between people, designed interactions, and the natural environment. With critical-making practices, you’ll engage with complexity and ideate, tinker, play, and express using digital technology. Β

Information Arts & Information Design Practices

Information Arts & Information Design Practices

Information shapes how we live, connect, and make decisions. From social media to artificial intelligence, from ecological challenges to cultural change, our personal and collective lives are increasingly mediated by complex information systems. The four-year Undergraduate program in Information Arts and Information Design Practices (IAIDP) at Srishti Manipal Institute offers intense, immersive, and systematic training to explore innovative ways to construct and craft information, tell stories, and responsibly create communication.

Spatial Design

Spatial Design

The Spatial Design course at SMI, prepares aspiring practitioners to navigate diverse future faced spatial design practices spanning interior design, exhibition and production design, spatial curation of experiential and immersive environments, facilitation of community and public spaces, urban research and strategy, and artistic engagements with the everyday urban. It envisions spatial design as an interdisciplinary practice to investigate, imagine, and transform spatial environments to enrich human experiences, inspire dialogue, foster belonging, and reimagine the everyday

Industrial Arts & Design Practices

Industrial Arts & Design Practices

How can we design solutions that benefit people, environments, and creative expression as we shift towards planet-centric design? How can we create sustainable products and systems by mimicking ecologically sound natural ecosystems? How can we adopt traditional practices for a cyclic and regenerative future? The Industrial Arts and Design Practice course focuses on β€œmaking” as a way of thinking, providing hands-on experience to develop an enduring understanding of processes, intuition and sensitivity.

Visual Communication & Strategic Branding

Visual Communication & Strategic Branding

The Visual Communication and Strategic Branding (VCSB) course at the Srishti Manipal Institute teaches students to become socially aware professionals who can effect change through activism and advocacy. It provides a strong foundation in visual communication design, advertising, and branding, as well as elements of strategic design and design thinking. Students will learn design history and context, strong communication skills, and the ability to create and execute meaningful forms and messages using various media. Β

Textile Futures

Textile Futures

Textile Futures is a four-year undergraduate program that reimagines textiles as a dynamic field, extending beyond fashion and interiors. Rooted in India’s rich handcraft traditions and informed by contemporary material and technological practices, the course positions textiles as a medium for material innovation, sustainability, cultural inquiry, and future oriented design. Students work hands-on with fibres, yarns, dyes, surfaces, and structures, learning both traditional techniques like weaving, printing and dyeing, and advanced practices such as computational weaving, smart textiles, and sustainable material systems.

Courses offered under BFA

Film

Film

Film today is at the most exciting juncture in its history. The big industrial film has begun to realign itself to changing expectations and new platforms of viewership. On the other hand, small and independent films that tell personal stories, question and investigate issues, or quite simply experiment with form and image have also found a larger global audience. From fiction to documentaries, narrative to non-narrative, and silver screen to pixel screen, film has found diverse forms, contexts, and viewing environments, making it an enduring and viable art practice for the future. This understanding defines the four-year BFA programme in Film at SMI.

Contemporary Art Practices

Contemporary Art Practices

The Contemporary Art Practice (CAP) Β stimulates and nurtures the creative force and artistic curiosity that resides in every individual. Its goal is to enable the student to enter the field of art practice through an interdisciplinary approach. In the course, the student explores specific media forms as well as non-media forms like drawing, painting, textiles, photography, sculpture, digital computing, coding, film, sound, and performance, along with exposure to science, technology, craft, public art and curatorial practices. This program provides a vibrant context that encourages critical thinking through making, dialogue, collaboration and community interaction.

Digital Media Arts

Digital Media Arts

While contemporary visual culture is replete with digitally produced and manipulated imagery, they all start on a drawing board with the stroke of the hand. Tactile exploration, digital intervention, and enhancement are key to envisioning impossible worlds and interactive virtual spaces. Commercial and artistic spaces today abound in several forms of time-based media works. At SMI, we encourage such media works to start primarily from a deep immersion into one’s social, personal, historical, cultural and contemporary contexts through the 4-year undergraduate course in Digital Media Arts (DMA)

ALUMNI SPEAK

"My journey from Srishti Institute of Art, Design, and Technology to the Harvard Graduate School of Education is a testament to the solid foundation built during my Bachelor of Design in Creative Education (Class of 2023).Initially drawn to the major’s vast scope, I soon discovered the powerful intersection between design and pedagogy.

This culminated in my pre-thesis project with children at the Marathahalli Slum Board, where I synthesized my learnings into real-world action. My mentors at Srishti challenged me to design with deep intention and empathy and taught me how to make complex ideas visible through multimedia.

Beyond academics, Srishti’s culture is its heartbeat. The environment is energetic and collaborative. Working alongside peers from diverse disciplines didn't just teach me teamwork; it fundamentally honed my leadership, communication, and adaptability. Srishti didn’t just teach me to be a designer; it pushed me to be ambitious and innovative. It provided the essential toolkit I rely on every day as I now explore Education Leadership and Entrepreneurship on a global stage."

MITALI JOSHI

Currently at Harvard Graduate School of Education

" IAIDP was rooted in context and problem-solving. Instead of focusing solely on the final output, the course emphasized process, diving deep into the nuances and intricacies of design thinking. This approach has helped me immensely, especially in a world that increasingly values hybrid individuals who can wear multiple hats and explore multiple disciplines.

It encouraged me not to limit myself to a specific role, but to remain open, experimental, and versatile. Even in terms of outcomes, it taught me to keep possibilities open-ended, embracing ambiguity as a space for creativity and exploration."

NIVEDITHA NARENDRAN

Course: Information Arts and Information Design Practices Graduated in 2022

"When I joined Srishti, service design was still a relatively new and unexplored field, which gave us the freedom to explore tools, methods and ideas, and to define what service design means to us.

There was a sense of curiosity and experimentation that was deeply encouraged by faculty. We were also allowed to take courses across different design majors and collaborate with students from different disciplines, and I believe this transdisciplinary approach helped fill any gaps in our knowledge, and complemented our skills and studies really well. Looking back, I think Srishti allowed me to develop a really solid design foundation from which to build my own unique design practice"

NISHA RANGDAL

Course: Business Services and System Design Graduated in 2020

"When I joined Srishti, I had absolutely no idea what this fancy sounding course would turn me into. My journey is defined by 'Ideas'. What differentiated BSSD was its profound focus on taking ideas to market.

I learned that while I can acquire all the design tools, applying them in real business contexts is the real game. BSSD taught me to think like a designer and an entrepreneur-understanding money, designing high-impact systems, and how to pitch creative ideas to stakeholders.

Every project felt like a mini-start-up. The freedom to choose classes allowed me to create projects with genuine social and business impact.

If you love solving problems and dream of a startup, this course is for you, because only ideas are not enough."
