Section B. Background, Motivation and Vision
We think that learning starts the moment you begin to pose challenging questions about the world around you, not in the classroom. This application is the first step in the actual course, not merely a formality. The following questions are meant to slow you down, make you think more deeply, and challenge your automatic thought patterns. Knowledge in design and environmental humanities is something that is developed via narrative, memory, creativity, and moral reflection rather than something that is consumed. You are already in the spirit of the course if you find yourself pondering, struggling, or even questioning your responses. Go slowly. Let the questions do the talking. The process of learning has already started.
Please respond to the 5 questions below. Each question should be answered in a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 300 words. Please answer using whole sentences and not bullet points.
Describe a time in your life, either personally or professionally, when you felt the impact of injustice or environmental loss. What impact did it have on you, and how did it alter the way you approach life or work?
(Hint: Be detailed. This concerns your individual emotional and moral reaction.)
Why do you think facts, data, and technical solutions are sometimes not enough to address environmental problems? Share an experience where something else — a story, a symbol, a memory, a ritual, or an art form — helped deepen your understanding.
(Tip: Reflect on meaning-making, not outcomes.)
Imagine you are designing something — a space, a policy, a ritual, a tool — not for humans alone, but for a more-than-human community (animals, rivers, winds, microbes). What would you design and why?
(Tip: This is not a test of design skills, but of your ecological imagination.)
Tell us about a work of literature, movie, work of art, or oral narrative that made you see the world in a new way. Why are you interested in this question?
(Tip: Decide on something that holds personal significance for you. Consider the change it brought about.)
What is a question about the environment, nature, or justice that you struggle with — one that doesn’t have an easy answer?
(Tip: Your ability to sit with complexity is what we are looking for.)
