Illustration communicates using images and has a close relationship with text. The communicative possibilities of the written word merges with the meanings embedded within images. It is an interdisciplinary field, encompassing media and cultural studies, studio art and design, literature, book and print history, art history, moving images (cinema and animation) and other disciplines that view images critically

Within this framework, illustration students can begin to consider “What is the relationship between an illustration and its text? ” “Why do we need images?,” and “What is the fundamental difference between word and images?”
The definition of illustration, from a historically expansive view, has come full circle to allow for many different approaches, from hand drawings for books (the role with which it is most often associated), to photography, murals, infographics, installations, video and animation or gifs, and even back again to being text-based.
