Overview

The Direction and Editing pathway is envisioned to create technically competent directors, who are reflective and critical about their practice. The course develops students to understand the tasks of the director within the different genres of filmmaking. This pathway offers the student a second skill – ‘Editing’ that will give them an added advantage in the industry. The course gives opportunities for students to explore the directorial and structural aspects of different genres of filmmaking through making.

What you will learn

In year 1 you will develop a holistic understanding of the larger filmic production process and be able to appreciate the different elements that constitute a filmic work. You will learn to apply various technical and creative elements of film practice at an introductory level across the domains of direction, cinematography, sound, editing, screenplay writing and production.

In year 2 you will develop stories using the codes of narrative construction and model core directorial tools and techniques to construct a narrative. You will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the editing process and we will teach you to apply editing techniques to construct a film. You will also acquire skills to construct relationships between lens, space, time and movement to tell a story.

In year 3 you will consolidate your understanding of key directorial/editing notions such as ideation, research, scripting, visualization & realization through working in real world projects. You will also learn to work independently on a wide range of media projects.
