Illustration is one of the oldest art-form to visualize ideas and communicate complex information. The Illustration pathway in the Graphic Arts and Design Program, contextualises image making with real world commercial usage, emerging trends in global illustration practices and cutting edge technological developments. This allows the student to navigate through the 3 year program that not only develops their craft, but creates industry ready, professional illustrators.

The Illustration program has been designed with inputs from industry experts and works in close proximity with industry leaders & creative professionals, both as collaborators for an extended period of Work Based Learning, as well as constantly updating the curriculum based on changing industry needs and trends. This institutional - industrial synergy is at the core of the curriculum. Apart from sessions where hands on skills and techniques are imparted to the students, we also have periodic simulations and exposure to commercial real world creative briefs, industry practice and production systems.

As of now the Illustration pathway caters to numerous industries - such as education, music, entertainment, fashion, publishing, media, science, medicine, literature, children’s literature and marketing to name a few. The students are taken through a rigorous 3 year cycle where they learn Sequential Storytelling, Character Design, 3D illustration, Digital publishing, Illustration for Editorials, Events and Advertising, Visual Merchandising and Printing Technologies.

What you will learn

In year 1 you will learn elements of basic design (Type, Colour, Layout, Imaging) and employ principles of Gestalt in creating simple print based communication material that combines text and illustration. Develop a range of drawing and imaging techniques, keeping in mind principles of cognition and perception. Use industry standard computer software to visualize, layout, and manipulate text and visual content. Understand and learn to work with various printmaking and production techniques to realize artistic as well as communicative ideas. You will also learn storyboarding, Visual Storytelling and Character Design. Develop capability to document your projects through a portfolio. In addition to that, you will have a period of exposure to industrial practice and real world working conditions.

In year 2 you will develop logical thinking, problem-solving ability and understand user needs through employment of design research and design processes. Learn to apply illustration/creative imaging to enhance communication, aesthetics, behaviour and visual perception of a brand. You will become proficient in industry standard computer software to visualize, realize ideas, illustrate, create imaginative layouts; manipulate visual content for print as well as screen based designs. Develop capability to critically evaluate and document your projects through a portfolio. Towards the end of this year you will work with the industry as an apprentice.

In year 3 when you return post your apprenticeship period, your experience with the industry will be examined, and areas of development will be identified. The fifth semester in the third year is focussed on developing the students’ capacities and professional practices to match industry standards. You will gain the abilities to conceptualize and execute a creative brief through proficiency in ideation, research, visualization, execution, communication and presentation. In the Sixth Semester, you will be required to work in your pathway related industry sector for the final capstone. And, you will have a professional portfolio that documents wide range of graphic design projects for print and screen.
